Re: "Nashville" Season 5

Not what I'd call country. Red, White and You gets closest with a bro-country style and I wasn't too keen on that. Not for me, Clive. But back to Nashville. It's a show that needs drama in the lives of it's characters. All the characters have the necessary drama going on with maybe one exception. Ra...

Re: "Nashville" Season 5

The Steven Tyler appearance was real cringe-inducing stuff. I hope it was as embarrassing for him as it was for us. He couldn't have looked less interested if he tried. Turn up, deliver your lines, walk away counting your money. Some of the guest star moments work; some don't.

Re: Best Death Songs

No, never tried to sing El Paso. I know my limitations. Neither my guitar playing nor singing is good enough to attempt to do justice to it. Have done Big Iron a few times though. But not by trying to copy Marty Robbins. You can't. The only thing one can do with any cover is to do your best in your ...

Re: Best Death Songs

Death songs you say. Well, you can't beat country music when it comes to death songs. It's one genre that never flinches from considering our own mortality. But I'll play along and limit it to five songs only. In no particular order ... 1. El Paso - Marty Robbins. The king of death songs everywhere....

Re: This Day in Country Music

Born on this day in 1979, was Shooter Jennings, American singer-songwriter (the only child of country music icons Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter). Jennings made his debut with the single "4th Of July" of his 2005 album Put the "O" Back in Country. Here's Shooter from his UK tou...

Re: Hopefully active again..

Kev, they frown on straps? I thought I knew all the silly controversies in the ukulele world but this is a new one on me. Marshal, The Grand Old Uke of York are awesome. You'll love it. Strap buttons are easy enough to fit if there's a block behind the base. If in doubt take it to your guitar tech. ...

Re: Different strokes for different folks

Well, here you go. Now you can judge for yourselves. SsF7rpzh5bA It's not what I'd call country. Just because the lyrics reference soldiers, whisky, motorcycles and rifles don't make it a country song. But it may be what some other person (some sad, misguided fool) calls country. It's not a bad song...

Re: Hopefully active again..

I've joined a uke club here in Scarborough. We meet once a week to play songs and learn new stuff. It's fun. Maybe you could join a club near you. Here's a pic of us playing at this year's Filey folk festival. http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w223/Thorby_Bislam/music/S%20S%202016%202_zpszuqbtv5c.j...

Re: Guy Clark

He's been poorly for some time so we were expecting this news. Still sad when it happens. Guy Charles Clark, the gravel-voiced troubadour who crafted a vast catalog of emotionally charged, intricately detailed works that illuminated and expanded the literary possibilities of popular song, died in Na...

Re: Prince

His real name, the name his parents gave him, was Prince Rogers Nelson. The story behind his changing his name to a symbol is this ... He was in dispute with his record company, Warner brothers. This was back in the '90s. He believed his contract was unfairly stacked against him. It probably was, Ma...
