Yorkshire Dales Bluegrass Americana picking weekend

Postby lewis_86 » Tue Nov 13, 2012 8:45 am

19th - 21st July 2013

There will be 2 concerts for this next year, and great sessions all weekend in the pub. It's in Silden, Yorkshire - Dales Bank Farm. Usually about £5/6 each concert and about a fiver for camping, which goes to the farm.

Bands TBC - so far it's Backyard Burners (www.facebook.com/BackyardBurners) , Sam Barrett TBC + Kidnap Alice TBC

Cheers

Busy time for me, being the weekend after Americana but if I can get to it I will.

Went to the Silsden Picking weekend in 2010 and 2011, didn't make it this year due to illness.
It is a fab weekend, little jamming groups all over the place, in awnings, out in the open and usually a couple in the bar.
They had a hog roast Sat aft in 2010, evening concert downstairs just £5 as lewis says.
Joined in the slow picking session on the Sun morning, that is great if you lack the confidence to join in with the main groups.
It is a busy weekend unfortunately, Wolvestock and the free Americana festival at the Sage in Gateshead. You pays your money and takes your choice I guess.

I went to a similar weekend at Roxby this summer. No concerts, just loads of folks jamming and doing singarounds. First time I've been to anything like that but I enjoyed it immensely. Silsden sounds like the same only with concerts. I'll put it on the list.

PS. How's the mandolin picking coming on?

Not well Bill, prefer my harmonicas really. Find them easier but cant bend.
Let me know about Roxby if it happens next year please. Never heard of it.
Do you see anything of the Whiskey Dogs? Used to be called Alley Cats. They're from Brid, saw them at Driffield Folk Festival.
They are fab would love to see them again.

Nooo.
When they were the Alley Cats it was a man, his wife and 16 year old daughter,( excellent mandolin player)
When I saw Whiskey dogs in Sept the girl is now about 21 and plays double bass aswell as mandolin. Dad was there too and another chap on ukulele banjo. No Mum that night but she might still join in sometimes. They are from Bridlington I believe. They might have a my space, bit late to look now.

I think I might have seen them busking. Dad played a resonater, Mum played bass guitar, the girl played mandolin and there was a younger son on washboard. They played jazzy, old timey stuff. Haven't seen them in a few years though. I know a trio from Brid called Three's Company. Next time I see them, I'll ask about them.

Re: the mando. I read a neat quote recently, 'The woods would be very quiet if no birds sang except for the very best.' In other words, make the best of what you have. Don't worry about being a poor Bill Monroe or a poor Chris Thile, just be a good CaroleC.

Whiskey Dogs are truely great. Ace musicians and really entertaining.

I've made an event for Silsden picking weekend, if you'd be so kind as to check it out, join and share to your friends if they have taste!

Just found out Wolvestock is back a week next year so no clash with Silsden.
It (Wolvestock) clashes with Rockridge now.
So it's Silsden and Rockridge for me :D
